The Listening Text

(You or a student can read this text aloud, or you can play the record on this video on YouTube.)

Yohani Diloka de Silva, known simply as Yohani, is a talented singer, songwriter, and rapper from Sri Lanka. Born in Colombo in 1993, she began her journey in music on YouTube. Interestingly, before becoming a full-time artist, Yohani actually completed university degrees in logistics management and professional accounting!

Yohani started her career by posting covers and original songs online. She gained some early recognition as the "Rap Princess" of Sri Lanka for her strong rapping skills.

However, in 2021, everything changed with her cover of the song "Manike Mage Hithe" (which means "Precious in My Mind" in Sinhala). This song was originally released in 2020 by Satheeshan Rathnayaka, but Yohani's version went completely viral.

"Manike Mage Hithe" quickly broke records. It became extremely popular, especially across South Asia, and was translated into many different languages, including Hindi and Tamil. The song's success gave Yohani global fame, and she became the first Sri Lankan female artist to pass a very high number of subscribers on YouTube.

Since the song's massive success, Yohani has had many exciting opportunities. She has performed in concerts internationally, appeared on popular Indian TV shows, and even recorded a song for a major Bollywood film. Her career is a great example of how the internet can help talented artists find a huge, global audience.
